The Friends and Neighbors Service Days are one of our most popular programs, which has been fostering partnerships between the University and the Los Angeles community. We work to connect student volunteers with local service organizations and schools in meaningful ways. New and returning students are introduced to incredible volunteer opportunities available at agencies in the Los Angeles area.
Our goal is to inspire students, staff, and alumni with a passion for service and to encourage their sustained commitment to volunteer work throughout their time here at USC and beyond. These one day service events take place on Saturdays throughout the school year. During the 2008-09 school year we sent nearly 900 students, faculty, staff, and alumni to over 40 organizations around the city to participate in agency-specific service projects. We hope that you will consider participating in this fun and enriching day.
Connect with local communities on Friends and Neighbors Service Day, the Volunteer Center’s most popular service event. The activities begin with a light breakfast in Alumni Park, where team leaders will meet with volunteers and explain the day’s activities and goals. Then, hundreds of students, faculty, staff and alumni participants will be sent to over 40 organizations around Los Angeles to assist in special community projects, including:

Beautification
Organization and neighborhood appearances are significant factors in determining community members’ quality of life. These projects will include cleaning, organizing and painting.
Community Gardening
Gardens not only offer fresh vegetables, flowers and herbs, but also the chance for individuals to collaborate, exchange resources and socialize, strengthening the community.
Friendly Visiting
Visits and conversations with children, hospital patients and the elderly provide opportunities for playing games, sharing stories and fostering connections.
Hunger and Homelessness
Still one of the country’s largest and most complex social issues, homelessness affects thousands of people in the Los Angeles area. Volunteers will provide food for individuals in need.
